Prenatal Support Programs

There are a number of provincial programs and initiatives that promote healthy pregnancy, infancy, and birth available for Saskatchewan families.

 

Prenatal support programs promote optimal pregnancy outcomes and healthy lifestyle choices. The programs provide support and education to pregnant individuals with their family and community.

The programs strive to be respectful and culturally sensitive to clients and their families. The programs provide support and assistance for:

  • Nutritional supports such as milk, prenatal supplements food vouchers
  • Housing resources  
  • Connection to other supports in the community
  • Use of substances such alcohol or drugs
  • Mental health
  • Family violence

 

Specific program areas include:

Healthy Mother Healthy Baby Program (Saskatoon)

This community based program is located in Saskatoon. The program offers information, education, advocacy, and support to pregnant people in the Saskatoon area. Healthy Mother Healthy Baby works collaboratively with many other programs in the community.  

Healthy Mother Healthy Baby has an open referral policy with many of the clients referring themselves to the program.

Food for Thought Prenatal Support Program (Saskatoon)

This community based program is located in Saskatoon at West Winds Primary Health Centre. This prenatal support program assists pregnant individuals and their children to achieve improved health and wellness. There is a focus on cooking low-cost nutritious food in a group setting. The group talks about pregnancy related topics after each cooking session.

The Food For Thought from the Public Health Agency of Canada is a member of the Canada Prenatal Nutrition Program (CPNP), offering prenatal and early childhood programming.

The program is provided at West Winds Primary Health Centre throughout the months of September to June. There is on-site childminding available during the program as well as transportation to and from the program site as necessary.

Healthiest Babies Possible Program (Regina)

This community based program is located in Regina at the Four Directions Community Health Centre. The program offers information, education, advocacy, and support. Healthiest Babies Possible works collaboratively with many other programs.

The Healthiest Babies Possible Program also provides:

  • Breast Friends Support Group for new or expectant parents with information on breastfeeding
  • Hands-On Cooking Circles as part of other programs for preparing healthy meals and snacks
  • Mossbag /Quilting Classes with creating a mossbag or quilt. The group discusses traditional cultural practices and teachings about pregnancy and parenting.
  • Prenatal Classes
  • Women’s Speaking Circle to share, to listen and to be heard, and to celebrate program participation.

Babies Best Start Program (Regina)

This community based program is located in Regina at the Al Ritchie Heritage Community Health Centre. The program offers prenatal and parenting information, education, advocacy, and support. Registration is required, with the program offered until your baby is six months old. The Babies Best Start Program provides:

  • Prenatal classes
  • Parenting classes
  • Cooking classes
  • Nutrition counselling
  • Low-cost grocery store
