Health and wellness programs and services are available for parents, newborns, and families. Postpartum visiting programs are available to support families with early discharge (within 24 – 72 hours) from the hospital. The program provides support and follow-up care at home following the birth of your baby.
Telephone follow-up, clinic appointments or home visits are provided by Public Health Nurses who:
- Contact you by telephone or do a home visit within 24 hours after your hospital discharge.
- Assess your recovery after birth.
- Assess your baby's health and weight.
- Assist and support you with infant feeding.
- Provide you and your family health information and answer questions.
- Help you and your family adjust.
- Refer and connect you to community services and agencies for support or care as needed.
Within your community, there may be Public Health Nurses who are International Board Certified Lactation Consultants.
The number of follow up calls or visits is determined by your family’s needs. Ongoing support and care for you and your baby after the first 10 - 14 days is provided in the community by your primary care provider.
