Hugging program results in surge in volunteer applications at JPCH

December 19, 2019
One of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) beds in the new Jim Pattison Children's Hospital.

The launch of the No Baby Unhugged program earlier this month has resulted in an overwhelming number people applying for volunteer positions at Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital (JPCH).

“The response to the hugging program at JPCH has been outstanding,” said Laurie Korol, Manager of Volunteer Workforce at JPCH. “Currently the number of positions available for the hugging program and other NICU and Pediatric departments are limited and have lengthy wait lists. However, there are many other volunteer opportunities within the hospital setting.”

All prospective volunteers are subject to a screening and interview process to ensure a position is the right fit for all parties. Additional orientation and placement training is also required.

“Every effort is made to ensure there is a mutual fit between patient, volunteer and staff.” added Korol. “It makes the experience better for everyone.”

Those interested in becoming a volunteer at JPCH must complete the online application at www.saskatoonhealthregion.ca/joinourteam/volunteer/Pages/Home.aspx. The eligibility requirements are outlined including expected commitment and Criminal Record Check. The minimum age to volunteer at JPCH is 18 and the more information provided on the application assists with recruitment for the right positions.

“We recruit at various times throughout the year,” stated Korol. “The available positions are always changing.”
